Activity increases on the Albanian energy exchange - Trading volumes on ALPEX

The Albanian Electricity Exchange, ALPEX, has recorded a significant increase in trading volume during the first quarter of 2026, reflecting changes in the regional energy market and the impact of new factors such as the European Carbon Mechanism (CBAM).

According to a report published by the Energy Community, trading volumes on ALPEX have increased significantly, doubling compared to the same period a year ago. This places the Albania-Kosovo stock exchange among the fastest growing markets in the region.

The increase is mainly related to the high energy production from hydroelectric power plants in Albania, which has created a surplus in the market and increased the supply for trading on the stock exchange.

At the same time, Albanian energy, based almost entirely on hydropower, is not penalized by the European carbon mechanism, giving it a competitive advantage over countries that produce energy from coal.

The report highlights that exchanges that rely on domestic production, especially those linked to renewable sources, have benefited from these developments, increasing liquidity and trading activity. In this context, ALPEX has benefited from favorable hydro conditions and increased energy exports from Albania to neighboring markets.
