Around 39% equity MFs outperform respective benchmarks in July 2024. Smallcaps draw a blank: Report


Nearly 39% equity mutual fund schemes outperformed their respective benchmark indices in July with value contra dividend yield funds putting up the best show, followed by largecap schemes, which rode on strong momentum in the Nifty index that ended with 4% month-on-month gains.

According to a study by Prabhudas Lilladher (PL), 78% schemes in the value contra dividend yield funds outperformed their benchmark — NIFTY 500 – TRI. In this, 25 schemes out of 32 fared better than the index. Meanwhile in largecap MF category, 58% schemes outdid S&P BSE 100 – TRI. This means that out of 31 active largecap funds, returns in 18 were ahead.

The study is based on 283 open-ended equity diversified funds, a PL note said.

PL Wealth Management, PL Capital, Prabhudas Lilladher’s wealth management arm, in its latest study on mutual fund performance analysis cited that the AUM (assets under management) of equity mutual funds has surged by 5.37% sequentially to Rs 25,12,845.59 crore in July 2024 from Rs 23,84,727.69 crore in June 2024.(excluding Sectoral / Thematic Funds)

Midcap funds were the next in line with 10 funds or 40% out of 25 benchmarked against Nifty500 Multicap 50:25:25 – TRI performing better than the latter. While 38% of those benchmarked against Nifty Midcap 150 – TRI delivered higher returns than this benchmark.

However, smallcap funds drew a blank with not a single scheme outperforming the index. There were 28 funds in this category which were benchmarked against Nifty Smallcap 250 – TRI index.In the focused fund category, the benchmark was NIFTY 500 – TRI and 36% schemes delivered a superior performance.Prabhudas Lilladher’s wealth management arm, in its latest study on mutual fund performance analysis, cited that the AUM (assets under management) of equity mutual funds surged by 5.37% sequentially to Rs 25,12,846 crore in July 2024 from Rs 23,84,728 crore in June 2024.

The analysis has excluded sectoral and thematic funds. The cumulative total of funds that outperformed stood at 109 during the month ending July 2024 (one month).
