Investors are grappling with uncertainty following last week’s inflation reports, which showed that price increases had already risen sharply in April and reached three-year highs in May, according to the source material from Yahoo Finance.

The Federal Reserve would typically respond by raising interest rates to curb spending that fuels inflation. However, in the current challenging economic environment, such a move could potentially cause more harm than good. As a result, the rate cuts that were expected to begin later this year have been replaced by cautious, defensive bets that rates may actually start moving higher. This indecision is working against stock markets.

One company that benefits from this uncertainty and the hedging it generates is CME Group (NASDAQ: CME), formerly known as the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. In 2007, the exchange merged with the Chicago Board of Trade to form the parent company CME Group, which later acquired the New York Mercantile Exchange. The organization now operates as a futures middleman for agricultural commodities, metals, interest rates, and some market indexes. If an asset is not a stock, it is likely handled by CME.

Even when equity trading activity is muted, the need to manage other auction-priced assets does not disappear. Many companies—including airlines, food processors, insurers, and miners—buy and sell futures contracts to protect themselves from unpredictable price changes. Speculative traders also participate, though the practice has become less speculative than in the past. It is now a necessity for institutions and individuals seeking to defend their portfolios from the unknown.

This trading comes with a cost, which CME collects in the form of spreads, transaction fees, and the sale of market data. This has become a significant factor for CME in recent months, as inflation has firmed up dramatically. Interest rate futures contracts, one of several futures CME handles, have seen a surge in trading activity.

For example, CME reported that nearly 73 million contracts on highly popular 10-year Treasury notes traded hands last month, up 24% year over year and nearly 92% higher than April’s activity. Two-year note futures activity jumped almost 31% from last May’s levels and soared nearly 129% from the prior month. Five-year note trading volume improved 94% in one month alone, while always-active Fed Funds Rate futures experienced a 61.5% increase in trading volume between April and May.
