Equities Market Extends Dip as Investors Lost N257bn, NGXASI Down 0.16%; BDC Rate Closed Flat at N1,420/US$1

Snapshot

1.1 NGX – Listed Equities

The Nigerian equities market extended its bearish trend into the last trading day of the week on Friday, August 14, 2026, extending losses from the previous session, as profit-taking in large-cap stocks dragged the benchmark index lower despite buying interest across several counters. INTENEGINS emerged as the session’s top gainer, while FTGINSURE recorded the steepest decline.

The benchmark NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined by 0.16% to close at 242,619.20 points, down from 243,017.38 points recorded on Thursday. Consequently, the market capitalisation dropped by approximately N257.06bn, while the market’s year-to-date (YTD) return moderated to 55.91%.

The bearish performance was largely driven by losses in selected heavyweight stocks, with DANGSUGAR (-7.79%), ETI (-5.41%), NB (-2.44%), FIDELITYBK (-2.27%), NEM (-1.77%), UBA (-1.09%), and WEMABANK (-0.67%), among the major losers.

However, the broader market remained under pressure, as 30 equities declined compared with 21 gainers. The negative market breadth reflected broad-based selling pressure during the session, with declines across key counters outweighing gains recorded in selected stocks and contributing to the market’s bearish close. Meanwhile, AVACAP traded below its 52-week low from N8.25 to N8.10.

The Proshare Memorandum Indexes closed bullish for the day, with the market cap-weighted index up by 0.07% to close at 1,379.03 points from 1,378.11 points, while the total return float-adjusted index increased 0.17% to 1,125.00 points from 1,123.09 points.

Volume and Value Contribution

Market activity weakened during the session, as total volume traded decreased by 66.64% to 1.41bn, valued at N45.31bn across 39,134 deals. FTGINSURE recorded the highest volume with 874.08m units traded, accounting for 61.83% of the day’s volume, while MTNN recorded the highest value at N31.37bn, accounting for 69.24% of the value traded for the day. CORNERST and UNIVINSURE accounted for 7.09% and 4.01% of the total volume, while FIRSTHOLDCO and FTGINSURE followed MTNN in traded value.
