ACORD Names John Kellington CEO as Insurance Industry Accelerates Digital Shift

ACORD has appointed insurance technology executive John Kellington as Chief Executive Officer, bringing back a former senior leader and board member to guide the insurance standards organization as data interoperability becomes increasingly important to the industry’s technology strategy.

Kellington returns to ACORD after most recently serving as Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Cincinnati Insurance. His background gives him experience on both sides of the insurance standards ecosystem: helping develop industry frameworks at ACORD and later implementing standards as a carrier technology executive.

The appointment comes as insurers, reinsurers, brokers and technology providers increase investment in automation, artificial intelligence and digital connectivity. Those initiatives depend heavily on the ability to exchange consistent data across organizations and technology platforms, putting standards and interoperability closer to the center of insurance technology modernization.

“We are at a pivotal moment for insurance technology, and success will depend on how well data moves,” Kellington said. “ACORD is at the center of this, providing the framework and standards that form the foundation.”

Kellington previously worked at ACORD from 2007 to 2010 as Senior Vice President of Standards Development, Information Technology, Corporate Finance & Membership. He later returned to the organization as a member of its Board of Directors.

During his earlier tenure, Kellington played a significant role in developing the ACORD Reference Architecture, a collection of models covering capabilities, processes, information and technology components across the insurance industry. The framework was created to give insurance organizations a common architectural foundation for technology development and integration.

Kellington subsequently spent 16 years as a carrier CIO, including his most recent leadership position at Cincinnati Insurance. There, he transformed the insurer’s information technology operations using an IT model built around ACORD architecture.

That combination of standards development and practical implementation is strategically relevant as ACORD seeks to expand its role within an increasingly connected insurance technology environment. Industry standards can reduce the friction involved in moving information between carriers, brokers, agencies and software providers, particularly as organizations attempt to automate workflows that historically relied on manual processes and incompatible systems.

“We are so pleased to welcome John as ACORD’s new CEO,” said ACORD Board Chair Robert Kelly AM, Founder, Managing Director and CEO of Steadfast Group. “John’s experience and success in implementing data standards marks him as the most fitting champion to advance ACORD’s mission and help create a more digitally connected and efficient insurance industry.”

ACORD has served as a standards development organization for the insurance industry for more than 55 years. Its membership includes hundreds of insurers, reinsurers, brokers, agencies, technology companies and industry associations spanning property and casualty, life, annuity, reinsurance and specialty insurance.

The organization develops and maintains digital data standards, data models, architecture and standardized forms intended to improve interoperability across that ecosystem. It also operates ACORD Solutions Group, a wholly owned subsidiary focused on technology for standardized digital data exchange.

The importance of those capabilities is growing as insurance technology moves toward more interconnected platforms. Insurers increasingly rely on external software providers, distribution partners and data sources, while brokers and other intermediaries must exchange information across multiple carriers. AI introduces another layer of complexity because the usefulness of automated systems depends in part on the quality, structure and accessibility of the underlying data.

That environment could increase the strategic value of common standards. Rather than individual organizations creating separate definitions and integrations for similar information, standardized models can provide a shared framework that makes it easier for technology systems to communicate.

“Data standards as the key to technology advancement has been the throughline of John’s career,” ACORD Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Tanya Krochta said, adding that his commitment to industry collaboration made him a strong choice to lead the organization.

ACORD engages insurance and financial services organizations in more than 100 countries and maintains offices in New York and London.

Kellington’s appointment places an executive with direct experience developing and deploying ACORD’s standards at the head of the organization. As insurance companies push further into AI, automation and connected digital workflows, his mandate will center on ensuring that the standards underpinning those technologies evolve alongside the industry’s increasingly complex data requirements.
