The two biggest total bond market ETFs, Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (NASDAQ:BND) and iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:AGG), track nearly the same benchmark, hold thousands of investment-grade bonds, and charge fees so low they round to nothing. For most investors comparing the two, either one works. Yet over long stretches, BND has carried a narrow lead, and the reasons for that gap say something about how these funds are actually built.
This piece walks through where BND and AGG genuinely differ, then compares them to two alternatives that some investors pair with or substitute for the core aggregate: Schwab U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (NYSEARCA:SCHZ) and Vanguard Total International Bond ETF (NASDAQ:BNDX). The goal is to help a reader see which fund fits which purpose.
Why the Aggregate Bond Category Still Matters
The 10-year Treasury yield sits at 4.65%, near the top of its 12-month range of 3.97% to 4.71%. The 10-year minus 2-year spread has recovered to 0.35% after briefly flattening in June. That combination, elevated yields with a modestly positive curve, is why aggregate bond funds are throwing off meaningful income again after years of thin distributions. Monthly payouts from BND have climbed from a range of roughly $0.16 to $0.20 in 2023 to around $0.24 to $0.25 in 2026.
Both BND and AGG are designed as core holdings: intermediate-duration, investment-grade, dominated by Treasuries, agency mortgage-backed securities, and high-grade corporates. Their return engines are essentially identical. What separates them is expense ratio, index construction, and a small compounding effect that adds up over a decade.
Vanguard Total Bond Market ETF (BND)
Tracking the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Float Adjusted Index, BND follows a version of the standard Agg that excludes bonds held by the Federal Reserve and other non-market participants, according to Vanguard BND fact sheet. In practice, that float adjustment tilts the fund slightly away from Treasury issues the Fed holds on its balance sheet and toward securities actually circulating in the market. Over long periods, that has led to sector weights that are marginally different from AGG’s.
The performance picture backs up the quiet edge. BND has returned about 15% over 10 years on a total-return basis, versus about 15% for AGG. Over five years, both funds are slightly underwater, with BND at roughly -1% and AGG at roughly -1%, reflecting the rate shock that hit long-duration bonds. The gap in either direction is small, but over decades, even single basis points of drag or lift compound.
According to the Vanguard fact sheet, BND’s expense ratio is 0.04%, which has historically been the lowest in the category. It pays monthly, with a trailing 12-month total of about $2.91 per share and a forward annualized rate near $2.93. On a share price of roughly $73, that works out to a yield of about 4%. The tradeoff is duration risk. When the 10-year Treasury spiked to 4.71% on July 23, BND slipped along with every other intermediate-duration fund.
iShares Core U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (AGG)
This fund follows the standard Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index without the float adjustment, which means its Treasury allocation reflects the full outstanding market. According to iShares’ summary prospectus filed with the SEC, the net expense ratio is 0.03%, one basis point below that of BND. That is the fund’s structural pitch: same broad exposure, a marginally cheaper wrapper, and backing from BlackRock’s iShares distribution.
Monthly distributions have climbed steadily, with 2026 payments averaging near $0.33 per share against a trailing 12-month total of $3.94. At a share price of about $97, the current yield is near 4%. The one-year total return of about 4% edges out BND’s roughly 4%, so the recent tape actually favors this fund. Where BND has held its narrow lead is at the 10-year horizon, and even that gap is small enough that tax lot placement or a single strong month could flip it.
The tradeoff with AGG is subtle. Because it does not float-adjust, it carries a slightly heavier weighting in bonds concentrated on the Fed’s balance sheet, which some purists argue creates a mild mispricing relative to what a private investor could actually buy in size. In practice, this affects returns at the margin.
Two Alternatives Worth Knowing
Schwab U.S. Aggregate Bond ETF (SCHZ) tracks the same Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index as AGG. Its investment logic is a cost play: SCHZ competes at the very bottom of the expense-ratio range and integrates cleanly for investors who already hold their assets at Schwab and want to avoid transaction friction. Holdings, duration, and yield profile track AGG closely enough that the choice between them often comes down to platform and habit rather than fund design.
Vanguard Total International Bond ETF (BNDX) serves as a diversifier alongside a domestic aggregate fund. It holds investment-grade bonds issued outside the United States, hedged in dollars. Pairing BNDX with BND or AGG addresses one of the sharpest critiques of the U.S.-only aggregate: it ignores the majority of the world’s investment-grade debt. The hedge is essential here. Without it, currency swings would swamp the underlying bond returns.
How to Decide Between Them
For an investor who wants one core bond fund and never wants to think about it again, BND and AGG are close enough that either works. BND’s long-run edge is real but small, and it depends on the float-adjustment methodology continuing to help at the margin. AGG’s one-basis-point cost advantage and slightly better recent performance offset most of that. Investors who custody at Schwab may find SCHZ the friction-free choice for the same aggregate exposure.
The more consequential decision is whether to hold only U.S. bonds. BNDX addresses the geographic gap. For investors already convinced that a globally diversified equity sleeve makes sense, applying the same logic to fixed income naturally leads to pairing a domestic aggregate fund with a hedged international bond fund rather than picking between BND and AGG based on a decade of nine-basis-point differences.
