Aberdeen Investments Reduces UK Gilts Portfolio Over Andy Burnham Leadership Concerns – News and Statistics

A major British asset manager has reduced its holdings of government bonds due to concerns about a potential premiership for Andy Burnham. Aberdeen Investments, which oversees £390 billion in client assets, according to the source, sold down a portion of its £10 billion UK bonds portfolio following what it described as a catastrophic local election defeat for the Labour Party.

Longer-dated gilts, the term for UK government bonds, are particularly sensitive to political instability as investors face risks over a longer period, making them more likely to demand higher returns in response to worries about protracted instability. Matt Amis, investment director at Aberdeen, noted that investors had previously given successive governments leeway to borrow despite the UK having six prime ministers and eight chancellors over the last decade. He stated that while every recent chancellor had been afforded some maneuvering room, the current situation is different, describing the gilt market as incredibly fragile given the price of oil and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, with maneuvering room now close to zero.

The move by Aberdeen preceded a week in which the pound experienced its worst performance against the dollar in 18 months, and long-term borrowing costs reached their highest level since 1998. Heavy losses in traditional Labour strongholds, including Wales, reignited questions about Sir Keir Starmer’s future. Wes Streeting resigned as health secretary, and Labour’s National Executive Committee cleared the path for Andy Burnham, the mayor of Manchester, to contest the Makerfield by-election and return to parliament.

Aberdeen indicated it had shifted some cash into shorter-dated UK debt, which is primarily driven by inflation and interest rate outlooks, citing a belief that a weakening economy would prompt the Bank of England to lower borrowing costs. Guillermo Felices, global investment strategist at PGIM, which oversees $1.5 trillion in assets, said leadership uncertainty could pressure UK borrowing costs for months, noting that bond markets hate uncertainty. He added that a by-election timeframe of six to eight weeks means a political vacuum for almost two months, which is terrible for markets.

Moyeen Islam at Barclays warned the shift in sentiment could be permanent, potentially adding billions of pounds to the cost of servicing Britain’s nearly £3 trillion debt pile. He stated in a note that the market may be transitioning to a higher gilt term premium environment if persistent worries over fiscal loosening, structurally higher inflation, and underlying political uncertainty continue.
