Jerod Mayo lands job with venture capital and private equity firm

Former Patriots coach Jerod Mayo has a new job.

Almost a year and a half after the Patriots fired him, Mayo has landed with Fifth Down, a Boston-based venture capital and private equity firm, as a managing director. He started in February, according to his LinkedIn page.

“Jerod joined Fifth Down as managing director,” reads Mayo’s bio on the company’s website. “Prior to Fifth Down, he built a distinguished career with the New England Patriots as both a player and coach.”

Mayo, 40, has kept a low profile since his firing. He hasn’t posted on social media, given an interview about his exit, or made many public appearances.

To see Mayo return in the business world is unsurprising, given his previous experience. Before he accepted a job on Bill Belichick’s staff as inside linebackers coach, he served as the vice president of business development for the healthcare company Optum for three years. He also built a portfolio as an angel investor.

“In parallel with his professional career, Jerod has been an active investor and advisor to private companies for over a decade,” Fifth Down’s website continues. “He is known for his disciplined leadership style, emphasis on preparation and accountability, and ability to build trust-based relationships.”
