Abbotsford hot dog vendor to revive weekly flea market

Hot dog vendor Skully White is reviving a popular Abbotsford event that ran weekly for 50 years (except during the COVID-19 pandemic) until its closure in 2024.

White is introducing his version of the Abbotsford Flea Market starting either this Sunday (June 21) or the following one (June 28). (As of press deadline, he’s still finalizing details.)

Lullys Flea Market will run every Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. until the end of September in the parking lot of the Canadian Tire at the corner of South Fraser Way and Garden Street.

A total of 60 stalls will be open in the southeast corner of the parking lot – Canadian Tire is donating their use for the event – near Lullys Hot Dogs, which White owns and operates.

Vendors will pay $20 for a parking spot each week, and they can book as many spots as they want. Admission will be free.

White will donate all proceeds to Jumpstart, which helps kids overcome financial and accessibility barriers to sports and recreational activities.

Canadian Tire is a the corporate sponsor of the organization.

White said he wanted to bring back a weekly flea market to Abbotsford because of the popularity of the one that ran from 1974 to 2024 at Exhibition Park.

The event had around 200 tables of merchandise each week, but the operators – Western Swap Meet Ltd. – indicated they were unable to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The market closed during the pandemic from March to July 2020 and had other closures in the months that followed.

In a statement in early 2024, the company said they had lost many vendors and shoppers during the pandemic and, four years later, they had not returned to pre-pandemic levels.

They advised city officials that they would be ending their lease agreement in February 2024.

White said he thought it was “really sad” that the market closed.

“It was something for people to walk around with their families,” he said.

“They could browse, find knickknacks – lots of interesting, weird stuff.”

He applied for a business licence through the city, and White said staff were so excited about the proposal, they approved it in eight days. (The process can often take weeks.)

White said the new market will run every Sunday, rain or shine, with spaces open to anyone who has something to sell, whether they are artisans, business owners, service providers or those with personal items they want to get rid of.

There will also be a section for people selling fresh produce.

Anyone interested in renting a stall is asked to contact White through his email at skully@lullys.ca or by phone at 250-384-0403.

Meanwhile, White is also raising money for Jumpstart through a raffle, which runs until the end of June, with one person winning all the prizes.

Several businesses and individuals have donated prizes, including restaurant gift cards, dryer vent cleaning, a TV, a patio set, an air conditioner, auto detailing and more.

White said the current value of the donated items is more than $13,000.

Tickets are $2 each and can be purchased in person at Lullys Hot Dogs, at the customer service counter in Canadian Tire or through an e-transfer with a minimum purchase of 10 tickets to skully@lullys.ca. (White will fill in the name on the tickets for the e-transfer purchases.)

The winning ticket will be drawn on the morning of June 29. The draw will be done live on the Lullys Facebook page (search “lullys.dog”).

Anyone who would like to donate prizes is asked to contact White at the aforementioned email address or phone number.
