1 Industrials Stock on Our Buy List and 2 Facing Headwinds

HRI Cover Image

Whether you see them or not, industrials businesses play a crucial part in our daily activities. Still, their generally high capital requirements expose them to the ups and downs of economic cycles, and the market seems to be baking in a prolonged downturn
as the industry has shed 1.5% over the past six months. This performance is a stark contrast from the S&P 500’s 10.9% gain.

Only some companies are subject to these dynamics, however, and a handful of high-quality businesses can deliver earnings growth in any environment. Taking that into account, here is one resilient industrials stock at the top of our wish list and two we’re steering clear of.

Two Industrials Stocks to Sell:

Herc (HRI)

Market Cap: $5.41 billion

Formerly a subsidiary of Hertz Corporation and with a logo that still bears some similarities to its former parent, Herc Holdings (NYSE: HRI) provides equipment rental and related services to a wide range of industries.

Why Are We Cautious About HRI?

  1. Efficiency has decreased over the last five years as its operating margin fell by 7 percentage points
  2. Issuance of new shares over the last two years caused its earnings per share to fall by 30.3% annually while its revenue grew
  3. Eroding returns on capital from an already low base indicate that management’s recent investments are destroying value

At $162.12 per share, Herc trades at 19.5x forward P/E. To fully understand why you should be careful with HRI, check out our full research report (it’s free).

Scorpio Tankers (STNG)

Market Cap: $3.57 billion

Operating one of the youngest fleets in the industry, Scorpio Tankers (NYSE: STNG) is an international provider of marine transportation services, specializing in the shipment of refined petroleum.

Why Does STNG Fall Short?

  1. Performance surrounding its total vessels has lagged its peers
  2. Sales are projected to tank by 24.9% over the next 12 months as its demand continues evaporating
  3. Earnings per share have contracted by 6% annually over the last two years, a headwind for returns as stock prices often echo long-term EPS performance

Scorpio Tankers’s stock price of $79.52 implies a valuation ratio of 12x forward P/E. If you’re considering STNG for your portfolio, see our FREE research report to learn more.

One Industrials Stock to Buy:

ATI (ATI)

Market Cap: $28.19 billion

With its materials flying in nearly every commercial and military aircraft in service today, ATI (NYSE: ATI) produces highly specialized materials and components for aerospace, defense, medical, and energy applications using advanced metallurgy and manufacturing processes.

Why Will ATI Beat the Market?

  1. Annual revenue growth of 12.9% over the last five years was superb and indicates its market share increased during this cycle
  2. Share buybacks catapulted its annual earnings per share growth to 32.9%, which outperformed its revenue gains over the last two years
  3. Free cash flow margin increased by 18.8 percentage points over the last five years, giving the company more capital to invest or return to shareholders

ATI is trading at $209 per share, or 38.1x forward P/E. Is now the time to initiate a position? Find out in our full research report, it’s free.
