It was the second consecutive time in a major tournament that they exited the competition at this stage after they lost their 2015 World Cup semi-final to Japan thanks to an injury-time own goal.

The Dutch side took the lead through now City forward Vivianne Miedema’s first-half header.

They went on to suffer a 3-0 defeat to a Dutch side led by Danielle van de Donk, and roared on by a record crowd of 27,093 for a women’s football match in the Netherlands.

Despite a heartbreaking departure, there were many positives for City’s stars as Toni Duggan scored twice while Nikita Parris also found the net.
