Ryon Reid was taken into custody Thursday, March 20, after Officer James Zwerling spotted a man matching Reid’s description walking on Cedar Lane around 5:09 p.m., Teaneck Police Chief Andrew McGurr said.
Zwerling recognized Reid as the suspect wanted in connection with a March 12 burglary and theft at Teaneck High School, in which he broke in during a Board of Ed meeting and roamed the school for nearly nine hours, police said previously.
When stopped, Reid was wearing the same outerwear seen in school surveillance footage, the chief said. He was arrested without incident.
At the time of his arrest, Reid was found carrying several U.S. Savings Bonds valued at approximately $500,000, all issued in the names of a deceased couple from Brooklyn, New York, according to McGurr. He also had the pair’s death certificates.
Detectives are now investigating how Reid may have obtained the bonds and are working to locate and contact the couple’s family members.
The investigation into the school break-in began March 13 at approximately 1:15 p.m., when staff at Teaneck High School noticed signs of a possible burglary. Classrooms had been disturbed and a reusable shopping bag had gone missing, police said.
Reid was initially charged with burglary and theft, then hit with an additional charge of second-degree receiving stolen property following his arrest. He has been remanded to the Bergen County Jail.
